Shafiqul Islam Khokon, West Coast Local Advisor
Shafiqul Islam Khokon is an investigative coastal journalist, researcher, columnist, and climate advocate who has been working for more than two decades on the lives, livelihoods, rights, and climate challenges of coastal communities.
Since entering the journalism profession, he has been engaged in investigative journalism and research on marginalized coastal communities, fishing communities, river erosion, cyclones, climate change, and environmental crises.
He has played a significant role in initiating and implementing the country’s first-ever list of missing fishermen and establishing a memorial plaque in their memory.
For many years, he has worked to preserve the lives and memories of people lost along the coast and to bring their rights and demands for justice to the forefront.
His reports, columns, and research-based articles have been published in various national and international media outlets, contributing to greater public awareness of coastal and climate-related issues. He is now serving as a local advisor of Project Upokul in the West Coast region.
